  • The environmental impact of the global fashion industry.
  • The role of academics in providing climate policy advice.
  • Sustainability research in the world’s mountains.
  • Youth engagement in climate action.

When: COP28 will take place from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12.

Who: The following CSU researchers will be in Dubai for the conference:

  • Hussam Mahmoud, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
    • Mahmoud will be participating in a side event that brings together the Interacademy Partnership, the Global Young Academy and the Institute for European Environmental Policy to discuss how senior and young academics from around the world can work together to address climate challenges.
  • Sonali Diddi, associate professor, Department of Design and Merchandising.
    • Diddi’s research will be shared in the CSU booth and highlight how the $2.4 trillion global fashion industry is one of the least environmentally sustainable, as it’s responsible for 2.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, as well as consumes excessive water and hazardous chemicals.
  • Colleen Duncan, professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology.
    • Duncan, who is a professor at CSU’s veterinary school, can discuss how climate change impacts the health of animals. She can also share how animal health advocates can engage in climate action.
  • Sheryl Magzamen, associate professor, Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences.
  • Aleta Weller, senior research and engagement officer, School of Global Environmental Sustainability.
  • Jacob VanderRoest, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry and the director of the Graduate Chapter of the Student Sustainability Center, School of Global Environmental Sustainability.
