Media Advisory/Photo Opportunity: CSU to Hold Annual Trash Audit March 6 as Part of RecycleMania

Colorado State University will host its annual Trash Audit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 6. The event takes place on University Avenue near the Computer Science building east of the Lory Student Center Plaza.

DETAILS: The Trash Audit occurs during RecycleMania, a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs around the country to promote waste reduction activities on their campus communities. The Trash Audit is conducted during RecycleMania to help promote the competition and educate the campus community.

CSU has been a participant of RecycleMania since 2004 and continues to be a leading contender, currently placing 29th among this year’s 524 participating colleges and universities. Since the first year of the competition, CSU has finished in the top 5 percent, even as the competition has grown from just 17 schools to more than 500.

For the annual Trash Audit, CSU will recruit students, faculty and staff volunteers to sort through one day’s worth of campus trash to determine how much of CSU’s campus waste could have been recycled or composted instead of being placed in the trash. Last year more than 2,000 pounds of waste was sorted and weighed revealing that 26 percent of what was thrown away could have been recycled, 36 percent could have been composted and 38 percent was considered trash.
