Colorado State University President Tony Frank today named longtime CSU professor Rick Miranda provost and executive vice president, filling the top academic position at the university.

Miranda has served as interim provost since January 2009.

“Rick is an excellent match with my own strengths and weaknesses, he knows and cares about our university, and he is ready, able and enthusiastic about helping CSU move forward,” Frank said. “He has proven himself a thoughtful, collaborative academic leader with a great respect for the process of academic governance and a strong, personal commitment to students, faculty and the land-grant mission.”

“I’d also like to thank our university community, as well as Vice President for Student Affairs Blanche Hughes who chaired the search committee, for their hard work to find the best candidate for this critical university position,” Frank said. “We had three outstanding, highly qualified finalists, and ultimately, I selected the person I think will be best able to hit the ground running on the many complex issues facing CSU.”

Prior to his stint as interim provost, Miranda served as dean of the College of Natural Sciences and chair of the Department of Mathematics at Colorado State University. Miranda joined Colorado State University as an assistant professor in 1982.

The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President provides academic vision and leadership to fulfill the land-grant mission of Colorado State University. The office communicates and facilitates the development of fundamental values basic to the university’s mission and administers academic programs and policies.

Specifically, the Provost oversees academic programming – about 150 areas of study – and faculty affairs on campus, coordinates faculty and staff diversity initiatives, new faculty appointments, the promotion and tenure process, sabbatical leave requests, faculty evaluations including annual reviews and post-tenure reviews, student appeals and commencement.
