Â??spoken Insurrection: Words of Love and Rebellion’ Presented as Part of Speaker Series April 17

Well-known writer and performer, Amalia Alvarez, will present "Spoken Insurrection: Words of Love and Rebellion" at Colorado State University on Thursday, April 17.

The event takes place from noon-1 p.m. in Room 208 Lory Student Center on campus. The presentation is part of Colorado State’s "New Perspectives in Contemporary Research" speaker series.

Alvarez has written, directed and performed anti-war guerilla theater in downtown San Francisco, Bay Area Rapid Transit stations and on BART trains. She has taught poetry workshops with young women in Oaxaca, Mexico, and with urban youth in Oakland and Berkeley, Calif.; Chester, Pa.; and Phoenix, Ariz.; from 2004-06. Alvarez worked with the Youth Speaks organization in San Francisco’s Mission District teaching poetry and spoken word workshops at high schools. In 2006, she received an honorable mention in San Francisco’s Browning Society Dramatic Monologue Contest for "Revolutionary Women Are More Beautiful." Her one act play, "Blazing," was selected for production at San Francisco State’s Studio Theater.

Alvarez teaches creative writing at the University of California-Riverside. She received her bachelor’s in American Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz and her master’s in English-Creative Writing at San Francisco State University. She is working on her master’s at the University of California-Riverside.

She has published in Fem Magazine, The Oaxaca Times, The Underground Railroad 2002 calendar, Artists Against Rape 2004-2005 chapter-book, and 2007 issue of Cipactl and San Francisco State’s Raza Studies Journal.  

The "New Perspectives in Contemporary Research" speaker series has been developed to provide the Colorado State community access to a variety of cutting-edge, original academic research. The speakers showcased are innovative senior scholars who have been examining critical perspectives on United States and international cultures, politics and societies. The intent of the series is to enlighten and educate faculty, staff and students to new ideas and perspectives.

The speaker series is sponsored by Colorado State University’s Accion, Department of Biology, Center for Applied Studies in American Ethnicity, College of Natural Sciences, Department of History, Department of Journalism and Technical Communication, Division of Enrollment and Access, Native American Student Services, Department of Social Work, Office of Student Media and Women’s Programs and Studies. The Fort Collins Museum and INCITE! Fort Collins Chapter also are sponsoring the series.
