Colorado State University Freshman Receives 4-H Scholarship

Colorado State freshman Matthew Herrington was recently named the 4-H freshman scholar and will receive a scholarship and leadership responsibilities in 4-H activities across the state.

The Colorado 4-H Youth Fund, as part of Colorado State University Cooperative Extension, annually offers a $1,500 scholarship to Colorado State students during their freshman through senior years in college who exhibit potential and experience in the fields of agriculture, 4-H and leadership. The Colorado Farm Bureau underwrites the scholarship and has supported this endeavor for over a decade.

Applicants must be Colorado State students and must have previous experience in the 4-H program. Applicants must have a strong 4-H background and knowledge of 4-H issues and must include a short essay about why they would like to be involved in the program at Colorado State.

4-H is a branch of Colorado State Cooperative Extension that reaches youth in more than 60 Colorado counties each year.

Herrington, an agriculture business major, has trained and showed beef cattle and horses and participated in public speaking and leadership. Herrington served as a 4-H club officer in his hometown of Livermore, as well as working as a volunteer firefighter and fundraising with the fire department of Livermore. In 2005, Herrington was named Junior Agriculturist of the Year by the Fort Collins Rotary Club.

As the freshman scholar, Herrington will promote and explain the benefits of 4-H to donors, shareholders and youth around the state. 4-H scholars will receive the $1,500 stipend annually as long as the student remains in good academic standing and required activities are met. The 4-H scholar is obligated to commit 20 hours per month to activities such as meeting with stakeholders and speaking at public events. The recipient is eligible for the scholarship each following year of their academic career.

The senior scholar is Lauren Frederiksen from Fort Lupton, the junior scholar is Heather Ray from Walden and the sophomore scholar is Kendra McConnell from Berthoud.
