Renowned Columnist and Author Presents Â??the Wisdom of the Crowds’ at Act Now Conference on Oct. 17

James Surowiecki, financial columnist for the New Yorker and author of "The Wisdom of the Crowds," will be presenting "The Wisdom of the Crowds" at Colorado State University from 8-9 a.m. Oct. 17 in Lory Student Center North Ballroom. The presentation is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Surowiecki’s presentation is in conjunction with the Alcohol in College Towns Conference, or ACT Now, Oct. 16-18 on the Colorado State campus. The university and the city of Fort Collins have joined to address the issue of alcohol awareness on college campuses across the nation.

Instead of relying on a single person for a good decision, Surowiecki argues that organizations should open up the decision-making process and aggregate the information and intelligence that usually is scattered across its different parts. He will discuss how the best decisions emerge from organizations that value independent judgment by individuals and the wisdom of crowds.

In his New Yorker column, Surowiecki is known for his ability to incorporate insights from economics, sociology and business history to make new connections between business and current trends in economics, society and politics.

In addition to writing books, Surowiecki has written for a wide range of publications on a variety of topics ranging from what primatology can teach everyone about the economic importance of fairness to the fundamental organizational changes that are propelling America’s current productivity boom. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wired and The Wall Street Journal. He is a former columnist for New York magazine and contributing editor at Fortune.
