Colorado State’s Environmental Learning Center Celebrates Earth Day with Earth Fest April 15-24
Colorado State University’s Environmental Learning Center will celebrate Earth Day during the annual Earth Fest from April 15-24. "Earth Fest 2005: Lessons From Nature" will include activities for youth, families and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Earth Fest events are a way for people to learn about how nature has taught and influenced humanity throughout history as well as a way to educate the public about conservation and environmental protection. Some events are geared to students and Girl Scouts, while other activities are suitable for families and adults.
At the Great School Escapes event April 15, students can learn about how Eskimo cultures learned to build snow houses and other ways that people have learned to copy nature to survive. Girl Scouts can enjoy a full day of exploring the outdoors at the Girl Scout EcoScout event on April 16. Scouts will learn about how to take care of themselves and others in nature through playing games, developing friendships and participating in fun activities.
Other events include bird-banding with the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, volunteering to prepare the gardens and trails for spring and summer use and a campfire mountain living program to wrap up Earth Fest on April 24.
All programs will take place at the Environmental Learning Center’s East Drake site, 2400 Ziegler Road, and require an RSVP by e-mailing elc@cnr.colostate.edu or by calling (970) 491-1661.
The Environmental Learning Center consists of 212 acres of land and trails along the Poudre River. It offers more than 180 environmental education programs for 3,000 children and individuals of all ages each year.
The ELC is also conducting its annual fund raisers, including the Rubber Duckie Rapid Race, on June 22, and its Adopt an Acre campaign. All donations made between now and June 22 will include an entry in the rubber duck in the race, and will go directly toward funding ELC’s educational programs. Prizes include a two-night stay in Estes Park, a mountain bike and a GPS unit. April 15 – Great School Escapes – Nature’s best models
– 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: Program for grades K-6.
– $30 per child, free for Environmental Learning Center members.
April 16 – Girl Scout EcoScout
– 9 a.m.-noon, Brownies (Outdoor Adventure).
– 1-4 p.m. (Young Outdoor Surroundings).
– $9 per scout.
April 23 – Spring Volunteer Day
– 10 a.m.-1 pm.: Help get the ELC ready for spring.
April 23 – Bird Banding
– 7-11 a.m.: Join the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory in banding birds.
April 24 – Full Moon Program
– 7-8 p.m.: Campfire mountain living program.
