Student Fundraiser Benefits Community, Pets

Colorado State University’s Students for Human Animal Relationship Education club is hosting Paint a Bowl for Your Pet from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 9 at Color Your World in Old Town, Fort Collins, 222 Linden St. The event is open to anyone who has a pet and is a fundraiser for the club. The cost ranges from $11.50 to $24.50, which includes studio time and pottery.

SHARE promotes the human-animal bond through community outreach and student lectures. The club provides information and advice on how animals affect people’s lives. Club members offer pet therapy to nursing home residents and pet education to students in community schools. SHARE trains students from Colorado State’s James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital to handle people in all types of human-animal situations.

"Pets are a wonderful thing to people, that’s no secret. People understand the power of the human-animal bond which is strengthened not only by a healthy, happy animal, but also by a well informed and caring owner," said Mike Morrow, SHARE club member. "SHARE is here to maximize that powerful bond through education and by providing an example to the community.  We want to show the community the countless ways in which animals diversify and gratify our lives."

As part of the club’s community outreach program, member will be conducting a "stump a veterinary student" challenge. The event will be an informal way for attendees to learn more about careers in veterinary medicine, and it will give veterinary students a chance to show off what they have learned at Colorado State.

Future SHARE events include speaker Dr. Alan Beck, a veterinarian who will present his project in February that seeks to create a realistic animal robot for those who cannot be around animals. In April, the club will host Finding Fido, which will focus on choosing a pet for you and your family.
