Award-Winning Journalist to Speak at Colorado State University

Helen Zia, an award-winning journalist, contributing editor and former executive editor for Ms. Magazine, will be discussing topics included in her recent book, "Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People," at noon and 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in the North Ballroom of the Lory Student Center on the Colorado State University campus.

Zia is a second-generation Chinese-American and longtime activist for social justice on issues in civil rights and peace, women’s rights and countering hate violence. Her articles, essays and reviews have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, The Nation and Sojourner as well as other publications.

In 1999, Zia was named one of the most influential Asian-Americans of the decade by A. Magazine. She also was designated Chinese American Journalist of the Year in 1998 by the Organization of Chinese Americans. Zia received awards for writing and editing, including the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Women’s Political Caucus, the American Society of Business Press Editors and the Detroit Press Club. Zia also traveled to Beijing to participate in the UN Fourth World Congress as part of a "journalists of color" delegation.
