Colorado State University’s Hatton Gallery Announces Exhibition and Event Schedule for Fall 2000 and Spring 2001

A full lineup of exhibits at Colorado State University’s Hatton Gallery this fall and spring will include "While the Crime is Blazing: Paintings and Drawings," by Leon Golub, one of America’s leading painters; a "Tribute to John Powers;" and many other special shows and lectures.

All exhibitions and events are free and open to the community. The Hatton Gallery is located in the Visual Arts building on campus and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

The first fall exhibition, featuring Leon Golub, will run Sept. 5-Oct. 13 with an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Hatton Gallery. The show, titled "While the Crime is Blazing: Paintings and Drawings, 1994-1999," includes Golub’s recent work which has shifted from a critique of the violence, oppression and cruelty humans inflict upon each other, to work of a more personal nature. In these paintings, Golub draws upon issues such as technology, media and information saturation, politics, language and the inevitability of aging and death.

The second exhibition, a "Tribute to John Powers," will run Oct. 23-Dec. 1 with an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Hatton Gallery. The late John G. Powers was an avid collector of American Contemporary art and Japanese art. With his wife, Kimiko, Powers assembled one of the foremost private art collections in the United States. Powers assisted in bringing artists of national importance to the Colorado State campus, including Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. The exhibition will feature works from the Powers collection, gifts from the Powers collection to the university and documentation of his involvement with and generosity toward the Art Department. Below is a complete exhibition schedule, including exhibitions featuring work by master of fine arts candidates.
