Wired: Before those microbes create biogas, they also generate volatile fatty acids. These could be made into jet fuel, or maybe even a fuel for fleets of city vehicles, says environmental engineer Sybil Sharvelle, who studies wastewater at Colorado State University. “There’s a lot of value in all sorts of those volatile fatty acids,” says Sharvelle.
