University role and the First Amendment

The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. CSU cannot restrict speech based on its content or viewpoint, even if that speech is controversial or unpopular, as long as it does not incite violence or violate the law.

The views expressed at these events belong solely to the speakers and organizers. They do not represent the views or values of Colorado State University.

CSU cannot deny access to speakers or groups based solely on their viewpoints. To do so would violate the First Amendment. The university can set reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions to ensure safety and minimize disruption, but it cannot censor speech.

Safety and event protocol

CSU Police and university officials are working together to provide a secure environment. Plans include designated entrances, clear event zones, and visible law enforcement presence. Emergency response procedures are in place should they be needed.

Demonstrations are permitted under CSU’s policies and the First Amendment. Designated protest and counter-protest areas will be in place to allow expression while maintaining safety and preventing disruptions to the events.

All attendees, including media, will go through check-in and must follow CSU policies. Security protocols, including bag checks and restrictions on certain items, may be in place. Attendees must follow directions from CSU staff and law enforcement.

Please note that game day protocols, including the clear bag policy, will be in place: https://col.st/FqBO8

Peaceful protest is protected. However, actions that disrupt the ability of others to participate or endanger safety are not permitted. Disruptive individuals may be removed from the event and, if necessary, face legal consequences.

Attendees should immediately call or text 911 in the event of an emergency. Emergency response teams will be on site and prepared to assist.

For safety updates texted directly to you, text CSURAMS to 888777. All safety messages will be posted to CSU’s safety website: colostate.edu.
