Tony Cheng

Cheng is the director of the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute. In this role, he oversees programs to develop, compile and apply current knowledge through collaborative, adaptive management approaches to achieve forest restoration and wildfire hazard reduction goals.

His research focuses on forest governance, policy and administration; specifically, collaborative approaches to promote resilient social-ecological systems linked to forest landscapes. CFRI executes on CSU’s land-grant mission by applying innovations in risk management with natural resource and fire managers and their local partners, giving them the tools to achieve “collaborative readiness” and make their environments more resilient to wildfire.

Cheng is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Forest Guild, the Society of American Foresters and the Society of Human Ecology. He co-authored the book, “Forest Conservation Policy,” published in 2003.

Cheng received his B.A. in political science from Whitman College in 1990. He then studied forestry, earning his M.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1993 and his Ph.D. from Oregon State University in 2000.
