Sheryl Magzamen is a faculty member in the Department of Environmental & Radiological Health Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Her research spans four key areas that explore the relationship between environmental factors and health.
From the health impacts of wildfire smoke on respiratory and cardiovascular health and its connection to COVID-19 outcomes to the effect of agriculture practices on the health of workers and production animals, Magzamen aims to understand how air pollution changes outcomes for both humans and animals.
She also examines environmental justice issues, such as pediatric asthma in urban areas and the impact of neighborhood diesel pollution near ports. Magzamen is currently leading a study on multiple environmental stressors in Denver neighborhoods.
She takes this work further studying school health, as she aims to understand how the physical and social environment influences the well-being of teachers, staff and students. Her goal in this area is to understand how to generate data to help plan and promote sustainable practices in school buildings.
