Kyle Hilburn is a research scientist for the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere – part of the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. His primary focus is using artificial intelligence to connect satellite observations with weather models to predict high-impact hazards including severe weather and wildfires.

Hilburn’s work is published in prominent journals including the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society and the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. His research has significantly impacted the way atmospheric scientists understand and apply AI to satellite data and pair it with weather models to produce more accurate forecasts.

He earned his B.S. at the University of North Dakota, his master’s in meteorology at Florida State University and his Ph.D. in atmospheric science at CSU.
