Klett coordinates the activities of the Flower Trial Gardens on the Colorado State University campus, dedicated to testing and evaluating annual and perennial plants in the unique high-altitude conditions of the Rocky Mountain/High Plains area. A member of the CSU horticultural faculty since 1980, Klett oversaw its relocation to its current space on Remington Street, where it has become one of the most-visited attractions in Fort Collins.

Klett’s research areas of expertise include landscape plant material identification, culture and care of woody herbaceous plants, as well as directing state and regional programs including Plant Select and Planttalk Colorado.

Klett received his B.S. in landscape horticulture from Ohio State University in 1969. He then studied horticulture at the University of Illinois, earning his M.S. in 1971 and his Ph.D. in 1974.
