Media advisory: Celebrate arts and science during 2nd Saturday at CSU Spur

What: The Colorado State University Spur campus comes alive every 2nd Saturday of the month for a day full of free interactive, hands-on activities for the whole family to enjoy. This month’s theme, “Arts and Science,” will feature a host of fun, educational activities encompassing everything from cooking demonstrations to an exploration of the vast spectrum of soil colors. A bonus? The entire event is indoors, guaranteeing family fun regardless of what Colorado’s weather chooses to do.
When: Saturday, Feb. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: The CSU Spur campus at 4777 National Western Drive in Denver’s National Western Center.
Cost: Free! Parking is also available in the lot north of the Vida building.
List of activities: Here’s a snapshot of what visitors can expect to see this 2nd Saturday at Spur:
- Demonstrations of how Italian ice is made, including samples of Spur’s dragonfruit flavor.
- Lab managers will teach visitors all about the hydroponic and aquaponic systems in Spur’s rooftop greenhouses and provide tours of the facility.
- “Hearts and Science” will take center stage at The Shop. Here, members of the Nancy Richardson Design Center will teach kids how to make 3D-printed anatomical hearts, heart-patterned paper airlines and more.
- Visitors can learn all about the vast spectrum of soil colors thanks to volunteers from the Soil, Water and Plant Testing Lab! Scientists will share samples of different soil colors and share what influences them and how it’s measured.
- Tours of the working laboratories on the Spur campus, including Water TAP, which innovates ways to filter and use six different types of water.
- A stream table showing the power of water and erosion.
- Veterinarians performing live surgery on dogs and cats in the Denver Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital.
- Virtual reality demonstrations on the first floor of the Vida Building.
- An equine sports medicine demonstration featuring underwater treadmills.
- And so much more!
