Media Advisory: CSU experts join world’s leading scientists studying disease that plagues deer, elk and related animals

What:

About 400 of the world’s leading scientists responding to a fatal disease affecting deer, elk, moose and related animals worldwide will convene in Denver for the fourth International Symposium on Chronic Wasting Disease from May 31 to June 2. The disease originated in Colorado and since spread to Canada, South Korea and northern Europe. It affects brain tissue in the animals and is always fatal as there is no cure. Scientists will discuss trends, responses and potential disease transfer to humans, which has not yet occurred, and other animals. Colorado State University is a sponsor of the three-day event.

CSU experts presenting at the event include:  

  • Alan Rudolph, vice president for research at CSU.
  • Glenn Telling, director of the Prion Research Center and professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology at CSU.
  • Mark Zabel, professor of prion biology and immunology at CSU.

Details:

The theme for this year’s event is “Overcoming Barriers to Control CWD,” with a focus on new discoveries and discussion of management and control strategies.

The event organizers include Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, USDA Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service, U.S. National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, Geological Survey and Colorado State University. Representatives from government agencies, industry organizations, conservation groups and the hunting community are expected to attend. CSU is a legacy sponsor of the event.
