Denver, Colo. — More than 120 Girl Scouts will visit the CSU Spur campus in Denver from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, as part of an exploratory day at the new open-to-the-public campus from the Colorado State University System.

Girl Scouts will rotate through interactive experiences across the campus to engage with scientists, researchers, and experts in animal sciences and agriculture, to learn about how animals and people support each other’s health and well-being, and how food is produced, supported, and grown.

During the event Girl Scouts will:

  • Learn about veterinary medicine and observe a live veterinary procedure.
  • Participate in the creation of horse enrichment for the horses of the Temple Grandin Equine Center and learn how horses support human health.
  • Create healthy snacks and learn about nutrition.
  • Engage in an investigation into plant illness and how to diagnose plants.
  • Participate in a planting activity in the rooftop greenhouse.
  • Explore interactive exhibits and content.

The event sold out in less than 24 hours and currently has a wait list.

“I’m really interested in learning more about the new CSU Spur campus and what it has to offer for girls like me,” said Girl Scout Senior Alison Estrada from Thornton. “I love that Girl Scouts gives me opportunities like this to explore my interests, learn new skills, and be a part of the innovative experiences available in my community.”

Many CSU Spur employees are former Girl Scouts, said Kathryn Venzor, CSU Spur director of education, and are excited to share CSU Spur with the students with the hope that the students will explore future careers in the sciences.

“We need these girls to feel supported and empowered to become the next generation of professionals in food, water, and health,” Venzor said. “This is just the start to a strong partnership and commitment to provide these opportunities at CSU Spur.”

Girl Scouts of Colorado CEO Leanna Clark will be in attendance with her rescue pup, Sabe. Girl Scouts will be able to earn a CEO badge from meeting Clark, and the event is the first step in a planned larger partnership with CSU Spur, with hopes for additional events and a future CSU Spur Girl Scout patch.

“We are so excited to kick off this new partnership with CSU Spur,” said Clark. “This interactive opportunity allows girls to learn about how animals and people support each other’s health and well-being, and hopefully gets girls thinking about ways they can incorporate STEM into their future.”
