CSU’s Hatton Gallery Features ‘Caravanserai: Carpets, Canvas, Calligraphy, Crafts from the Middle East and North Africa’ Sept. 3-28
An upcoming exhibit at Colorado State University’s Hatton Gallery features diverse artwork from the Middle East and North Africa region. Several Colorado State University departments and faculty members have collaborated on the exhibit, “Caravanserai: Carpets, Canvas, Calligraphy, Crafts from the Middle East and North Africa.” The free exhibit opens with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 3 in CSU’s Hatton Gallery and will continue through Sept. 28.
Caravanserais were places that provided rest and refreshment for travelers on trade routes throughout the Middle East and North Africa.
The Caravanserai exhibit aims to broaden the public’s understanding and appreciation of the rich and diverse artwork from the Middle East and North Africa regions, which include Mali, Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
In addition to the items on display from the CSU community, objects collected by Northern Colorado residents who have lived or traveled through this region are also included in the exhibit.
Guest speakers Allison Mackenzie Shah, from the University of Colorado-Denver, and Paul Ramsey, an international expert on oriental rugs and weaving, will present public lectures at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 and 22 in Room F101 in the Visual Arts Building on the CSU campus. Shah will present “Trading in Ideas and Aesthetics: The Regional Arts of the Islamic World” on Sept. 16. Ramsey will present “Weaving in the Context of Culture,” on Sept. 22. Receptions will run from 5-7 p.m. both evenings.
Caravanserai is sponsored by a Lilla B. Morgan grant, a U.S. Dept. of Education grant for the Middle East/North Africa Option in International Studies, the Hatton Gallery, International Education, CSU’s Department of Art, Department of Design and Merchandising and Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
