The College of Business at Colorado State University awarded Jared Webb Cumpsten, a senior business administration major, the 2009-2010 William G. McGowan Scholarship, which provides full-instate-tuition scholarship.

Scholars are selected based on academic performance, a minimum grade point average of 3.0, financial need and two essays. Applicants must be full-time business students and recommended by a faculty member of the business school.

Cumpsten has demonstrated his leadership abilities through active participation in several organizations. He served as the liaison for the Student Legal Services Advisory Board; as assistant director for RamRide, managing nightly operations of the safe ride program at Colorado State; and as an associate member of the Student Fee Review Board, which provides recommendations on student fees to the CSU Board of Governors.

Cumpsten also served as a cabinet member for the Associated Students of Colorado State University, acting as liaison between administration, faculty and students to promote student interests. For over five years, Cumpsten has been a member of Colorado Youth Outdoors, a program that helps bring high school students and their parents closer together through the use of the outdoors.

In August 2008, Cumpsten received the AmeriCorps Service Award for completing more than 500 hours of service to nonprofit organizations.

Cumpsten graduated in 2006 from Mountain View High School in Loveland. There he served as president of Mountain View High Schools Student Government, as well as the president of the Senior Class of 2006.

The William G. McGowan Charitable Fund was named in honor of the man who founded MCI Communications Corporations in 1968. The objectives of the McGowan Scholars Program are to recognize academic achievement, encourage leadership, reward excellence of character, and increase awareness of the contributions made by McGowan to the fields of business, telecommunications, entrepreneurship, and society.
