Colorado State University Encourages Safe Holiday Weekend

The Fourth of July means a three-day weekend filled with summer fun and tradition. But for some neighborhoods around the Colorado State University campus, the holiday also means a barrage of fireworks going off in neighborhoods. Each year, neighbors around campus get frustrated with illegal fireworks being set off at inopportune times of the day and night.

Fireworks of any kind are illegal in the city of Fort Collins. The penalty for a fireworks violation will result in confiscation of the fireworks, issuance of a summons into municipal court and a fine of $250. To avoid a summons, costly fine, possible fireworks-related injury and fire danger, it’s best to leave the fireworks shows to professionals. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, nearly 10,000 people last year were treated for fireworks-related injuries. Many required hospitalization. The estimated annual cost of fireworks-related injuries in the U.S. is about $100 million.

Last July 4th, Fort Collins Police Services received 453 fireworks complaints and made 17 arrests. Throughout the city, 350 pounds of fireworks were confiscated. Those fireworks then were destroyed with the help of Poudre Fire Authority. Police and fire officials emphasize that the use of fireworks within the city limits can present a fire danger to homes and property.

Fireworks also can be a nuisance to pets. Larimer County Animal Control took in almost 40 dogs between July 4 and 5 last year. In some cases, the dogs were left outside while their owners were elsewhere. Pets that are home alone during the Fourth should be left inside or other secure places where they will feel safe. Fort Collins and Colorado State University police departments and the Poudre Fire Authority said that increased enforcement will be in place for people who bring fireworks of any kind into the city.

For a great fireworks display in Fort Collins in a safe and controlled environment, City Park will have a show that starts around 9:20 p.m. Pets, alcohol and fireworks are not allowed.
