Feminist Scholar Presents Â??the New Visibility of Muslim Womenâ?� April 21 at Colorado State University

Prominent feminist scholar, Miriam Cooke, will offer perspectives on gender and Islam, women’s writings and relations between the Islamic world and the West in her presentation, "The New Visibility of Muslim Women," from 7-9 p.m. April 21 in Room 104 Yates Hall on Colorado State University’s campus.

Cooke is a leading scholar on Arab and Muslim women writers. She is former department chair of Comparative Literature at Duke University and currently a research fellow at the University of Jakarta.

Her books on Arabic literature and culture include a co-edited anthology of Arab feminist writing, "Opening the Gates," as well as several critical works such as "Women Claim Islam: Claiming Islamic Feminism Through Literature," "Women and the War Story," "War’s Other Stories: Women Writers on the Lebanese Civil War" and "Muslim Networks from Hajj to Hip Hop." She has also written a novel, "Hayati my life" in 2000. Her most recent work, "Dissident Syria: Making Oppositional Arts Official," was published in July 2007.

Her presentation is made possible through a grant from the Lilla B. Morgan Memorial Fund, which was established to enhance the cultural development and atmosphere of Colorado State University.
