Alumni, Friends Nationwide to Participate in Colorado State University Volunteer Event

More than 90 Colorado State University alumni and friends nationwide will volunteer from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 14 for CSUnity, a one-day program of service, community and leadership.

This is the first year for alumni and friends to participate in the event, which for 11 years has allowed Colorado State students to volunteer throughout Larimer County. This year, CSU alumni and friends around the nation will contribute about 300 hours of service to their communities.

One of the main goals for CSUnity is to support and better local communities.  

A list of the events for alumni and friends follows.

– Colorado Springs: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Sorting, stocking and distributing building materials for Habitat for Humanity Restore. This organization re-sells building materials; proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity building projects in the Pikes Peak area. This activity may require light to moderate labor, and participants must be at least 16 years old.

– Denver: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Delivering meals to participants of Project Angel Heart, a nonprofit agency that provides meals for people living with life-threatening diseases. Limited volunteer spaces are available, and driving may be required.

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Home painting and outdoor landscaping and maintenance for Brother’s Redevelopment, a nonprofit organization that concentrates on programs that allow low-income elderly and disabled persons to continue living independently in their homes and communities. This activity may require light to moderate labor.

9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Maintaining outdoor facilities and gardening for Harvest Farm/Denver Rescue Mission, a nationally recognized nonprofit rehabilitation program focused on providing residents with the skills, stability and self-esteem necessary to become productive, self-sufficient members of society.  The project will be taking place at an off-site location. Carpools will be arranged; driving may be required.

– Kansas City, 9 a.m. to noon: Sorting and repackaging donated food for Harvesters: The Community Food Bank, which is the area’s only food bank. The organization distributes two million pounds of product each month in an effort to end hunger in Kansas City.

– San Francisco Bay Area, 9 a.m. to noon: Sorting food and clothing donations and packaging and distributing meals at Sacred Heart Community Service. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to helping impoverished individuals and families by collecting and donating food, clothing and other necessities.

– Washington, D.C., 1-4 p.m.: Sorting food, leading education programs and preparing mailings for the Capital Area Food Bank. The bank is the largest public nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource in the area. Participants must be 12 years old, and those who are between the ages of 12 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

CSUnity sponsors are the Office for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, Residence Hall Association, Alumni Association, Greek Life, ASCSU, Housing and Dining Services, Lory Student Center and First National Bank.
