Colorado State University Hosts the Future of Science at the 48th Annual Colorado Science and Engineering Fair

More than 300 of the state’s top junior and senior high school science students will compete in the 48th Annual Colorado Science and Engineering Fair April 10-12 at Colorado State’s Lory Student Center. In addition to the student competition and exhibitions, this year’s science fair will feature guest speaker Joseph Golden, senior research meteorologist at the Forecast Systems Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, who will present "The Truth Behind the Movie Twister: Tornadoes – Past, Present and Future."

"Colorado State University is proud to host the state’s brightest young science and engineering scholars for the 2003 science and engineering fair," said Courtney Butler, fair director and assistant to the director at Colorado State’s Center for Science and Mathematics Technology Education. "We encourage the public to visit the fair on Friday and Saturday to witness the amazing projects created by these young scientists."

Student exhibitions will be open to the public from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 11 and from 9-11 a.m. April 12. The public is especially encouraged to attend the fair on April 12 when students will be available at their exhibits and the award winners will have been announced.

First through third place prizes will be awarded at the fair in junior and senior divisions for 10 categories of projects: Botany, Earth and Space Science, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Health and Behavioral Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, Microbiology, Physical Sciences, Zoology and Team Projects.

The top two exhibitors also will win an all-expense-paid trip to represent Colorado at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair being held this May in Cleveland, Ohio.

Established in 1956, the Colorado State Science Fair is a private, non-profit organization that sponsors the statewide competition and is the final event in a year-long sequence of local and regional science fairs. More than 40 businesses, professional societies and government agencies provide 120 representatives to judge the exhibits.
