Darris Cumming Recognized for Contributions to Colorado State

Darris Cumming of Julesburg is recipient of the Colorado State University Alumni Association’s Honor Alumni Award for support to the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Cumming has served on various agricultural-related committees within Colorado State. In addition, he has actively recruited potential students for the university. He continues to carry his dedication to the student experience at Colorado State through his involvement with three scholarship committees.

"Few people in Segwick County give more time or money to their local community," said Gary Landcaster, Colorado State Cooperative Extension Segdwick County director. "Darris also has been a consistent, dependent and positive contributor to Colorado State and agriculture."

A 1959 graduate of Colorado State, Cumming serves the Northeastern Colorado State Alumni Association as a 40-year member and prior president. In addition, he’s a founding member of the Colorado State Beef Club, chairman of the Sedgwick County Colorado State Alumni Association and helped to secure donations for a livestock trailer for Cam the Ram, the Colorado State mascot.

While a student at Colorado State, Cumming served as president of the Ag Council and chairman of public relations for the Student Union Board, and was a member of the judging team and the Colorado State Livestock Club and vice president of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, among other accomplishments.

Cumming serves the Julesburg community with his involvement in Rotary, Lions, Northeastern Colorado Cattleman’s Association and the county 4-H livestock sale. In addition, he’s a 14-year member of the Sedgwick County Republican Central Committee and is currently chairman, and vice chairman of the 65th House District. He’s also served on the Sedgwick County hospital board for eight years.

Cumming and his wife, Peggy, have two children and two grandsons. He currently owns Cumming Realty, with offices in Julesburg, Sterling and Yuma, and Cumming Cattle Company.

Colorado State Alumni Awards are presented each year to special alumni supporters of the university, its programs and Colorado State students.
