Award-Winning Photojournalist to Present Slides During Holocaust Awareness Week at Colorado State University

Award-winning photojournalist Nick Del Calzo, whose book, "The Triumphant Spirit," portrays nearly 100 survivors of Nazi death camps, will present a slide show and talk at Colorado State University 7 p.m. May 1 in Room A103 Clark Building. The event is part of Holocaust Awareness Week, which runs April 28-May 2 on campus.

Del Calzo began documenting survivors after visiting Dachau, a death camp near Munich, in 1991. Over the following years he met individuals who survived a Holocaust that eventually claimed the lives of 9 million Jews, Gypsies, Soviets and others throughout Europe. Del Calzo’s goal was to capture the hope, spirit and legacies of the survivors in a tribute to the strength of human endurance.

"The day will come when the last Holocaust witness will perish and these voices will be silenced forever," Del Calzo said. "My hope is that by capturing their portraits and their messages, they can continue to inspire future generations and continuously rekindle hope for a brighter tomorrow."

Del Calzo, who lives in Denver, will exhibit his portraits and stories of Holocaust survivors in May in the Cannon Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. In addition, "CBS Sunday Morning," a weekly television show, produced a segment on "The Triumphant Spirit" project. Del Calzo also has had his work exhibited nationally and published in leading photography magazines and annuals.

Holocaust Awareness Week is co-sponsored by Students for Holocaust Awareness and Hillel Jewish Student Organization. Funding is provided by a Diversity Grant, the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and Hillel Jewish Student Organization.
